Thought for the week <<
John McCain v Barack Obama
For anyone that didn't know. John McCain was
at the bottom of his military class at Annapolis,
but still got to pilot a fighter plan due to
his father's connections. He is the son and
the grandson of admirals. He finished
894 of 899 in his graduating class. Despite
crashing five aircrafts, John McCain was never
disciplined. And son-of-single-mother Obama
is, of course, the privileged elitist.

DRANK
This is a funny review, for the 'legal alternative' purple stuff.
"When I mixed a drink of Drank with vodka and drank that Drank drink, I didn't feel anything."

Towa Towa
So apparently NYC's Guyanese population has these singing bird competitions... Bets are placed and the best song wins! Unfortunately people were caught trying to smuggle birds (never good), but compared to cock/dog fighting, this is a more interesting animal contest (since it seems like it might be pretty subjective?).

NOOOOOOOOOO, This is terrible!!!
K-Swift, a hugely popular and influential DJ in Baltimore died in an accident at her home. This is pretty tragic and sad, and she will be missed!

WALL-E
I saw WALL-E the other day with Y and T. It was an astounding film that can't be recommended highly enough, and one of my favorite Pixar movies. The first half is particularly remarkable. Somehow Andrew Stanton managed to make a dystopian future sci-fi movie that everyone can enjoy. It should win Best Picture, it is a masterpiece of film making.

Volkswagen Type II, blind selection
These are some cool ass VW bus toys from Japan, in the classic 'blind selection' box. I'd love to rock one of these, but they are getting more rare and expensive by the day - so for now I'll settle with the 1/56.

Biking Update
So I think I'm getting the hang of the biking thing...I did 3 rides into the city in a week, for about 40 miles total. My legs are sore but not as bad as I would have imagined, and I have no more moments of weakness on the bridge. It's an extremely satisfying feeling to get around under your own power, and I have beaten Y's 'subway vs bike race home' a few times. I have been plotting my routes using the G-Map Pedometer - a great resource for figuring out mileage. This day was a ride to work at DZ in the morning (mid-town sucks, I haven't yet found the ideal route across town) a trip to an opening at the drawing center in Soho, a meal at a pretty decent cuban place whose name escapes me, and a ride home. 15.7 miles in total.

VBS: The Vice guide to North Korea
A video series worth watching... man what a weird, sad place! I'm not sure if I would risk myself to film all this stuff, and I'm not sure how they got away some of this footage.

Got the bike on the road!
I bought this bike on ebay at the beginning of winter, it is a 1989 Cannondale 'Black Lightning'. It is a special edition color, and it is supposed to have all black components...I'm kind of glad it isn't complete (and kind of beat up) though, I'm already nervous about locking it up on the street. I finally put the new tires on (Continental Gatorskins, MUCH better than the old ass tires that were on there) and went for a real ride - from Sunnyside in Queens to Chelsea to meet with Y. I hope to ride to work at the gallery in Chelsea frequently, and after the trial run it seems very possible that I will be able to do it. It should take about 40 minutes, about how long the train ride is on a good day. I have little experience with road bikes, and this 13 mile round trip was by far my longest ride. I had to walk a little on the Queensboro bridge, the full mile uphill was rough! I'm also getting used to dealing with traffic, it's completely different from walking and driving, and it is actually kind of fun.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Beach Access
I went on family vacations to Hatteras Island for many years. I have very fond memories of driving on the beach, finding the perfect spot and pretty much having your own space on the beach. My dad is a surfer, and he spends some time there every summer - I haven't been back in years, but I would love to. He forwarded me this website, and he has been telling me about this proposal for a while...the Audubon society, and North Carolina Park Service, are trying to ban most beach driving (and beach access in general), to protect Piping Plover and sea turtle breeding grounds. I'm sort of conflicted about this, because I'm all for birds, conservation of habitat, etc, but I feel like there could be a compromise worked out that would keep the beach accessible. This whole chain of islands is seriously threatened by rising sea levels and climate change, so people and animals should try to share until it is lost to both.

Instructions for every LEGO set, ever!
The Brickfactory site is a little 'old school', but that is easily forgiven since this is such a complete collection! I really need to dig mine out of the parents attic and get to building. This is a page from the 1980 catalog, I have a couple sets from this year.
